Laughter, Conversation, and Serranos

I don't make nearly enough time to be with my Grandparents. I think most people my age can relate. Life gets busy and sometimes, even though we have the best intentions, we don't always make time in our busy, growing schedule to visit with those we love. This goal was to make it a point to see my family more often. Whether it's an early morning breakfast with my Grandfather or a kitchen visit with my Grandma, I have loved every single moment I have spent with them this year.

This past week, I made my way to Lincoln Park to visit my Grandma. We spent time talking over a big bowl of Mexican Mac n' Cheese, one of my favorite recipes of hers, laughing and catching-up. It just felt good to be in her presence. Right before I left, she insisted that I take home some fresh Serrano Peppers from one of her closest friend's daughter's gardens. She took out the bag of peppers from the refrigerator and I could smell how hot they were from 20 feet away! She even had to wear rubber gloves just to handle them.

Of course, my reaction was that I couldn't possibly use these peppers in a hot sauce and with a smile and a bit of a laugh she said, "Of course you can, Mija. This is what my Mom used to make chile with." Now it all makes sense why my Grandmother likes her hot sauce so hot. She's so stinkin' cute.

My beautiful Grandma Francis, rubber gloves and all!
